KINETIC SCULPTURE CHALLENGE

A BRIEF HISTORY

Boulder's Kinetics was started it 1979 by what was then KADE am - KBCO fm , now just KBCO Boulder
It was modeled after the Arcata to Ferndale Kinetic Sculpture Race , started by Hobart Brown in 1973? (about) when he added a sculpture to his kids tricycle and his neighbor challenged him to a race down Main Street .
Arcatas race is 38 miles over three days , traveling over highways , dirt roads and wish there were roads , sand , mud and swamps ,lakes , bay and ocean .
Boulders course has shortened from 14 miles the first year to about 4 1/2 miles with a 3 hour time limit to finish . About half the course is on land , including dirt roads , mud and prairie , with sand on the beach , and the other half on Boulder Resevoir , with 12 transitions from water to land or land to water configurations of the craft .
Theirs is sponsored by a spring water bottler , ours by a brewery
They also have some more rules and regulations than the Boulder Challenge .
Just minor differences but basically , well sortof the same
I guess that's why they call theirs the world championships .

The main idea is to create a colorful craft or sculpture based on a theme that can travel over land and water while you wear wild costumes and act like a crazy kid .
The teams are judged by a member from each team , forced to accept and often consume the bribes thrust in thier direction in hopes the team they are judging will get higher points .
Judging is on four categories ;
Style ,Sculpture , Costume and Engineering .
Style
Is having a good time , staying in the theme of the craft , and your part in it , helping others in need , maintaining your dignity while acting the fool , and doing it with style
Sculpture
Is based on your craft , or the sculpture it's become during the long hours , tense days and creative materials spent on it . A good theme helps , especially if it's abnormally outlandish . but keep it light .
Costumes
Should be in keeping with the sculpture , with bright colors and extreme creativity . Multitudes of the same creatures wandering around the crowd gets noticed . (the kids will love it , and they're the next Kineticists .)
Engineering
Is the mechanics and structure of your craft . Is your sculpture a true ATAV made of different materials suited for their job or just an old bike tied to an inner tube with some string ?
And the team needs to work together with it all , to make your sculpture a truly remarkable spectacle .

Oh yeah , there is the shifty swifty trophy for the first across the finish line , but somehow that's not the point of the day .
